A Preview of a Forthcoming Western New York Red Earthenware Book

With the completion of my forthcoming eighth 587-page New Hampshire book, titled, An Influential Family of Early Potters: The Clarks of New Hampshire and Related Businesses, which should be out later this year, I am now working on a Western New York book. The title of the book is America's Great Awakening and Migration: The Red Earthenware of Western New York. The book will run 600-700 pages, and I'm hoping for a spring 2024 publication date. 

Furthermore, these are three outstanding nineteenth century slip-decorated red earthenware objects that will be included in the book, whereas they are related to production in Rochester, New York, circa 1820s, and perhaps another business that operated nearby after 1830, known as the Drake Pottery. 

Interestingly, the pitcher shown to the bottom left was illustrated in the 1974 catalog (shown to the bottom right), Regional Aspects of American Folk Pottery, and it was previously owned by New York archaeologist and museum specialist George Hamell. These objects are all privately owned in the Midwest today.

Additionally, the book will include tons of never before published archaeology from a number of potter's site in Western New York, as well as information from an unpublished manuscript and the personal hand-written notes of George Hamell. 

The book will also include a countless number of surviving objects that have never been published before from private collections, the Rochester Science & Museum Center, the New York State Museum, the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., Winterthur in Delaware, Historic Deerfield in Massachusetts, along with dozens of small museums and historical societies located in New York. There will also be some information about red earthenware potters located elsewhere in New York and archaeology from New York City.
