A Black-Glazed Pitcher from New Jersey on Display at the Wadsworth Antheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut

This is another object from the Albert Hastings Pitkin Collection currently displayed at the Wadsworth Antheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut. I don't think glazed earthenware from New Jersey is a subject that is widely understood today, and in some cases may even be mistaken for wares made in Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut. As a result, I try to post on this website each and every piece of New Jersey red earthenware that I see in museum collections.

As simple as the glaze is on this object, the form seems rather unusual - and that's why I thought it would be a topic of interest. According to the Wadsworth Antheneum, "This circa 1825-1850 pitcher was made by George Hamlyn at the East Lake Pottery in Bridgeton in Cumberland County, New Jersey, located south of Philadelphia and west of the Delaware Bay."

It should also be noted that the East Lake Pottery was strategically located along the Cohansey River, which connected to the Delaware Bay, likely presenting an endless amount of export opportunities for this business in the 1800s.
