To my knowledge, this is the only example of sgraffito identified to New Jersey today; although, I suspect there may have been more examples of sgraffito produced by Durell based on the ability exemplified in this dish.
Nevertheless, while on vacation, I visited the Newark Museum a few weeks ago with my nephew Jason to see this treasure, and it did not disappoint. The dish was displayed in a room filled with a variety of pottery manufactured in New Jersey in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
I was actually surprised when I walked into the room to see my nephew already reading about the dish that was hung in the cabinet to the left of him in the picture below.
I haven't attempted a lot of research into Durell's background, yet, but he may be related to Jonathan Durell (d. 1809), a Philadelphia trained potter who relocated to New York City and established a red earthenware business about 1753. Jonathan Durell's involvement is not known, but it is believed that his business operated until the early-nineteenth century, suggesting that it may have been a family business, as well.
However, production from Phillip Durell's business likely also catered to the New York City market seeing he was located only a few miles outside of the city. The location may have been a part of the business model, similar to many other American potters, which were located just outside the city limits of their primary marketplace.
