19th Century Grecian Revival Pottery from Chelsea, Mass. in the Collection of the MFA in Boston

As I have already written in a previous post from today, I visited the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston last week. There was no agenda. I walked around the museum's various wings admiring ancient-to-modern art from all around the world. But an aspect about the museum's collection that I truly enjoy is the remarkable selection of Roman artifacts, which are displayed throughout the museum.

However, I also marveled at these nineteenth century Greek Revival red earthenware objects decorated by John Gardner Lowe (1835-1907) at the Chelsea Keramic Art Works in Chelsea,  Massachusetts during the circa 1873-1878 period.

There are very-few of these exact type of objects known to exist today from Chelsea; whereas, these specific pieces survive in remarkable condition, with one example having been acquired by the museum in 1877, the very year it was made (see captions below for more information).

Otherwise, I'm only familiar with two other pieces from this exact brand of production in existence today; the first is owned by Historic New England and the other was sold about ten years ago on eBay from Indiana.
