A Fabulous Day at an Onsite Sale at the Historic Barnard Tavern in Kennebunk, Maine

It has been a few weeks since I wrote about purchasing much of the nineteenth century Maine-made red earthenware that was owned by the late, William 'Bill' Johnson of Kennebunk, Maine. Mr. Johnson is a former Maine-state auctioneer, antiques dealer and antiques collector; whereas, he even operated his own local museum in Kennebunk.

He is probably most-known outside of Maine for his appearance on the television show, 'American Pickers,' when Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz visited his property, and they attempted to pick his enormous antique collection; however, Bill Johnson would not allow them to buy anything from his property. Although, Amesbury, Massachusetts auctioneer, John McInnis was recently consigned the property, the landmark building, some of the museum inventory and all of the home's contents.

Nevertheless, it was only a few weeks ago that the first part of the Bill Johnson's collection was sold at John McInnis' auction gallery in downtown Amesbury, where an important early-nineteenth century tavern sign sold for more than $40,000 to a private dealer. This sign has since appeared at the Winter Antiques Show in New York City.

The remainder of the collection sold yesterday and today at a two-day onsite sale on Bill Johnson's property in Kennebunk. Everything was sold onsite to the highest bidder. The old Barnard Tavern was also sold to a couple from Essex, Massachusetts for $440,000, where they hope to eventually fully restore the building and turn it into a private residence and an antique shop.

Locally Made Pottery Discovered in the Barn Tavern in Kennebunk, Maine
I won two lots today, which included a great group of early American glass for my father, but I also bought a group lot of red earthenware for myself. It consisted of seven items; however, I am only going to show three of those objects tonight.

Below, you will see a wonderful colorfully glazed handled pot in great condition that is decorated in raspberry, green and cream-colored glazes. Separation can also be seen in the glaze. I believe this pot was made in southern Maine, circa 1820-1860.

I have also shown another handled pot with significant glaze lose that I believe was made in either southern New Hampshire, central New Hampshire or southern Maine, circa 1800-1860.

The last object is a rare small Grecian-style red earthenware urn, which was made at the Chelsea Keramic Art Works in Chelsea, Massachusetts in the 1870s. A similar object is owned today by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
