The third and final installment of my three-part Dodge Pottery of Portland, Maine series will be published in Antiques & the Arts Weekly this fall. This story is not to be missed if you enjoy New England redware!
The history of the Dodge Pottery has been largely forgotten and somewhat misinterpreted through the years, especially in the twentieth century. However, I have been working with living descendants throughout New England over the past four months in order to reintroduce the story of this business and the family’s legacy to print. The third installment ties in the previous two stories and finally accurately defines the output of Maine’s first known and arguably most important red earthenware business, circa 1790s-1870s.

In fact, some of what I have been able to take out of this research is that the known wares attributed to the potter Thomas Truxton Kendrick (1803-1878) in Hollis, Maine are not accurate, whereas the objects attributed by museums to Kendrick were actually made in Portland.
The third story also directly relates the Dodges to the Chase and Goold families of Portland, as well as other families that are already documented elsewhere in New England. When I was introduced to these family connections by current descendants, it really highlighted a much bigger picture of how important this family was in the 1800s! I’m really looking forward to this article!

*** Furthermore, this research will also be included in my seventh book that I hope will be published sometime early next year, titled, From One Town Came Many: The Red Earthenware Industry of Ancient North Yarmouth, Maine.
Note: These early photographs are all owned by a living descendant of the Dodge, Chase and Goold families of Portland and North, Yarmouth - these are not included in the forthcoming article, although the people who are shown in these pictures do have strong ties to the Dodge Pottery of Portland.
