The Continued Study of William Pecker and His Stoneware Made Before 1820 in Merrimacport, Massachusetts

Earlier today, I visited the site of William Pecker's Pottery in Merrimacport, Massachusetts with my nephew, Jason, which is located on the Merrimac River. We collected a large group of stoneware sherds and kiln furniture that are directly related to Pecker's stoneware production; although, he is mostly known for red earthenware production today, circa 1790-1820.

The most exciting artifact that we discovered was found laying among the green sea grass below a few inches of water. The sherd was decorated with the partial remains of an impressed bird perched on a branch decorated with cobalt. A similar bird can be seen on a rare surviving William Pecker jar that was published in the 2004 edition of Ceramics in America, which was described as a "New Discovery" that had been found a few years prior at a flea market in Kentucky.
