Incredible Slip-Decorated Red Earthenware Dishes Recovered from Privies in Philadelphia

All of the following slip-decorated red earthenware dishes were recovered by Bruce Adwell from privies in Philadelphia - and, with the exception of the smallest dish in the picture of four, which was recovered from a circa 1780-1810 context on Cuthbert Street, the rest were removed from a circa 1780-1800 privy in Philadelphia. The use of slip on each of these artifacts is remarkable.

The production of some of these objects also remind me of the wonderful late-eighteenth or early-nineteenth century red earthenware platter that just sold at Freeman's Auction in Philadelphia. That platter had been privately owned since about 1980 when it was purchased from New York City antiques dealer, George E. Schoellkopf.
