19th Century Baltimore, Maryland Stoneware Pitcher Sells in Portsmouth, New Hampshire

A real good nineteenth century cobalt-decorated stoneware pitcher sold last night at Northeast Auctions at the Treadwell Mansion in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I was the underbidder, but was not completely positive where this object was made; although, I knew it was from either Baltimore or Philadelphia, possibly circa 1850. I also estimated the pitcher was about three-gallons in size.

Upon inspection, the condition appeared remarkable with no noticeable damage or restoration. The cobalt was also well-executed with a striking color blue.

Thanks to Curtis Rice, who just authored the book, 'James River Stoneware & the S.S. Perry Connection,' and Jeff Ingram who specializes in redware and stoneware restoration in Maryland, along with some other people, we were able to determine the pitcher was in fact from Baltimore.

I was impressed with the size, form and decoration on this object. Although, I have found comparable nineteenth century cobalt-decorated pitchers attributed to Baltimore that have sold at auction for a few hundred dollars, as well as several thousand dollars in recent years; whereas, this particular pitcher sold last night for $1,020, which included the buyer's premium.
