There have been many prominent American red earthenware collections sold at auction in the last 40 years; although, the Howard Gilman Foundation Sale at Christie's Auctions in New York City in January 2003 and June 2004 was certainly one of the most competitive. This sale happened before I was regularly involved with red earthenware as I was actually a college student at the time. But it is a catalog that I have always admired, and some of the more exceptional pieces from this sale have since resided in noteworthy Midwestern and New England private collections. In fact, in recent years some of these objects have emerged back into the antique market through antique dealers and some auctions; whereas, some of the prices achieved in 2003 and 2004 seem to be still relevant today.
A friend once described the significance of this collection to me: "The Howard Gilman Foundation was a private collecting vehicle of the Gilman Brothers Company, a large privately owned forest products company in Georgia. They had a New York office, where they displayed redware, decoys, and a world-class photography collection, which went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The redware collection was assembled in the 1980s and early-1990s. It was owned by two Gilman brothers and sold in two separate sales at Christies."
I have posted all of the red earthenware that Christie's sold in the Gilman Sale below. Many of the objects were sold in group lots. I have also tried to identify each object within the general vicinity it was made in the eighteenth or nineteenth century.

Love, Love, Love. I don't think I've ever seen redware with such a shine to it. What years did Howard Gilman start his collection because these seem pristine. I'm a novice at this, so please forgive me. The forms and colors are definitely unique.
It was a great collection assembled in the 1980s and early 1990s.
