19th Century Hanging Green Glazed Flowerpot in the Collection of Winterthur in Delaware

I have handled a number of hanging red earthenware flowerpots through the years, made in central and northern New England in the nineteenth century. But I had never seen a green glazed example, until recently, when I toured the red earthenware and stoneware collection at Winterthur in Wilmington, Delaware.

It is possible that this flowerpot was made at the Noah Bradford (d. 1832) and Daniel Parker, Jr. Pottery in West Barnstable, Massachusetts in the 1820s, where a variety of green glazed flowerpots were manufactured by Bradford with attached and detached saucers, some even with crimped rims, but I have never seen this exact form from this business before. In fact, sherds of green glazed flowerpot saucers were excavated in the 1980s at the site of the Bradford-Parker Pottery by Sagamore, Massachusetts antiques dealer, Brian Cullity. Some of these artifacts were later illustrated in 1991, when Slipped and Glazed: Regional American Redware was published.

Among my reasons for suggesting such an attribution is how the attached saucer on this pot was manufactured, which closely resembles surviving objects, as well as sherds recovered at the site of Noah Bradford's pottery, who was previously a second generation potter employed in Kingston, Massachusetts.

Although, to my knowledge, the object from the Bradford-Parker Pottery that most resembles this hanging flowerpot is a flowerpot with an attached saucer in the collection of Historic Deerfield in Deerfield, Massachusetts. Written in pencil on the base of this pot is the inscription, "Mrs. S.A. Parker / Barnstable / Cape Cod Pottery."
