19th Century Western New York Red Earthenware Pitcher Displayed in a Museum Exhibit Dating from the 1920s

This is a museum exhibit that has been on display in Western New York since the 1920s, and having been displayed at the Rochester Science and Museum Center in Rochester, New York since the 1940s.

The reason I have posted this picture today is a result of the colorfully glazed red earthenware pitcher that rests on the left side of the mantel above the fireplace. I have seen this type of pitcher previously attributed to Maine because of the glaze; however, this is actually a style made in Western New York, probably at the circa 1825-1862 Alvin Wilcox (1801-1862) Pottery in West Bloomfield, New York.

Similar examples are also known to reside in local private collections, some of which I will try to show later this month.
