New Book: The Moses B. Paige Company: The Last of the Peabody Potteries

This is a short post today to update any of you who are anticipating my forthcoming book, The Moses B. Paige Company: The Last of the Peabody Potteries. This is a follow-up to another book I authored, The Beverly Pottery: The Wares of Charles A. Lawrence, which was published a few months ago by Historic Beverly in Massachusetts. Both of these books go together, seeing that there are similarities with each business, and in many they ways are connected, by way of production, years of operation, location and employees. These books are the result of about ten-years worth of research with this new Peabody book being the first to publish such a detailed account about the Paige Pottery.

My research for this book has brought me to museums and private collections around the country, including the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C., the Peabody Historical Society, the Topsfield, Massachusetts Historical Society, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, as well as archaeology sites and collections all over New England, such as the City of Boston Archaeology Program in West Roxbury, Massachusetts.

The story of the Paige Pottery is compelling, but largely unknown today. This business manufactured a significant output during the circa 1876-1941 period, with production including utilitarian wares, decorative wares and commemorative objects. In fact, some of the production is often misidentified as pottery made during the early-nineteenth century.

Yesterday, I visited the John Cabot House at Historic Beverly in order to pickup the proof copy of the Peabody book. The new book should be available in the next month or two through Historic Beverly's bookstore and Historic Beverly's website shop. I will post that information as soon as it becomes available.

It is also worth noting that two events are being planned for the release of this book at the Peabody Historical Society and the Topsfield Historical Society, where those who attend will be able to see some of the incredible objects that are illustrated in the book.
