Two Slip Decorated Plates Found in an Old Farmhouse in Newville, Pennsylvania

The contents of an old limestone farmhouse in Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania were sold yesterday by Rowe's Auction Services; the house and contents were owned by the late James and Mary Dodrill. For reference, Newville is located around the halfway point of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in the southern part of the state, and just to the west of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. 

The property appeared to have been packed with all sorts of antiques, much of which originated in Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region. Although, there was also a good amount of red earthenware and stoneware found in this house. 

Two of the red earthenware pieces in particular stood out to me, which were late eighteenth or nineteenth century plates profusely decorated with slip, one of which was adorned with all sorts of slip patterns. In fact, albeit the damage, this object really is a work of art with lines of slip applied around the outer part of the plate and the center completely covered in a circular pattern. There were also dots of slip applied and a centralized motif in slip. I cannot recall having seen a related plate before, whether it came from an archaeological context or a museum collection, such as Winterthur in Delaware, the Philadelphia Museum of Art or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Additionally, there was red earthenware production in Shippensburg, Cumberland County in the 1800s with such potters as Valentine Rudolph (1822-1890) and John Carey (1790-1850), among others; however, there is also a lot yet to be learned about red earthenware production in Cumberland County.
