A Red Earthenware Lion Found Yesterday in Maine that Possibly Originates in the Philadelphia Area

While out and about yesterday in Maine - I found this nineteenth century molded red earthenware lion doorstop or decorative piece in Rachel Gurley's Antiques Gallery in Scarborough, Maine. And while I do not have proof of any red earthenware examples - the shape of this lion mold closely resembles two recumbent earthenware lions in the collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, which are attributed to James and Thomas Haig Jr.'s Pottery in Philadelphia, circa 1812-1893.

Note: A similar lion is also owned by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, Connecticut that is said to have been made in Connecticut.
