An exciting collection of stoneware is slated to sell next month at Pook & Pook, Inc. in Downington, Pennsylvania, where the collection of Bud and Judy Newman of New Hope, Pennsylvania will sell on April 23, 2021. It is certainly one of the finest single owner collections of American stoneware to be offered publicly in years; the sale will include dozens of pieces, although, these are some of the finer examples posted to Facebook in the last month by Jamie Shearer.
Undoubtedly, many of these pieces will be heading to other prominent private collections and perhaps even major museum collections. There is a lot to choose from, however, my personal favorite is the first picture I posted of an incredible nineteenth century incised stoneware pitcher that was likely made in Baltimore, Maryland in the early 1800s. The incised decoration and the form of the pitcher is similar to some pitchers made by Henry Remmey in Baltimore, circa 1812-1821 owned in the William and Susan Mariner Collection, along with an incised flowerpot attributed to William Morgan in Baltimore, circa 1820-1825, which sold at Crocker Farm in Sparks, Maryland in 2016.
