An Outstanding 19th Century Red Earthenware Jar From Vermont

Over the weekend, I was fortunate to acquire this outstanding nineteenth century red earthenware jar thought to have been manufactured in Vermont. The color on this piece is unreal, and for obvious reasons, I have always admired it. It is a part of a small group of related jars known to exist today, some of which are owned by the Vermont Historical Society in Barre, Vermont. I feel this piece could be displayed in any American art museum.

The jar stands nearly fourteen inches tall, and it is decorated in an incredible vibrant selection of glaze colors. The jar is also decorated with various tooled designs. It even retains a wonderful twentieth century history of ownership, having been owned for many years by New York City ceramic specialist and appraiser on PBS's Antiques Roadshow Garrison Stradling, and more recently by Massachusetts antiques dealer Sam Herrup.
