19th Century Southern Maine Red Earthenware Jug Found in the Midwest

Recently discovered in the Midwest, this excellent nineteenth century southern Maine red earthenware jug sold last night on eBay; similar pieces have done very well in recent years at places like Gould Auctions in Gardiner, Maine, Skinner in Boston and Northeast Auctions in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. 

I have heard this form in the past attributed to John Alld in Hollis, Maine, although, I have not seen any archaeological evidence, matching published jugs or museum pieces to support that attribution. Instead, I usually say it is more generic, having been made in southern Maine, which includes Hollis. Either way, though, this is an excellent piece of northern New England red earthenware that survives in wonderful condition.

The jug sold for $860.
