This wonderful eighteenth or early nineteenth century red earthenware jar from Bristol County, Massachusetts sold today at Revere Auctions in St. Paul, Minnesota. Standing nearly ten inches tall, it is decorated in quite a desirable glaze, utilizing a number of colors. Although, very few of these jars with this type of glaze are known to exist today; in fact, the few examples that I know about are some owned privately in coastal northern Massachusetts, others that were in the Hilary and Paulette Nolan Collection in Falmouth, Massachusetts, as well as examples owned by Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbrige, Massachusetts, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the John Ashley House Museum in Sheffield, Massachusetts.
The jar sold for $1,800 plus the auction premiums.
Some other Bristol County red earthenware also sold today at Auctions at Showplace Antiques in Manhattan.
