A Small 19th Century Northern New England Red Earthenware Pitcher

This is a small nineteenth century red earthenware pitcher that I just acquired last week from Rockland, Maine antiques dealer Ross Levett; he had recently purchased it from Casco Bay Auctions in Freeport, Maine. I had actually seen the auction listing, although, once I had the pitcher in hand, and saw the color of the glaze in natural light, I realized that this could be a rare piece of circa 1820-1850 red earthenware from Vermont, otherwise, it was likely manufactured somewhere else in northern New England. The condition and size is outstanding, measuring just six inches in height!

Interestingly, I had tried to buy this exact pitcher last year in a group lot of six pieces of red earthenware at a Frank Kaminski Auction in Beverly, Massachusetts, but was unsuccessful. The pitcher retains at least a twentieth century history of ownership in the circa 1667 Stephen Daniels House in Salem, Massachusetts (see below).
