Late 19th Century Cabinet Card Illustrating a Nineteenth Century Red Earthenware Jar with Twisted Handles Found in Indiana

Any type of nineteenth century photography displaying early American utilitarian red earthenware or stoneware is exceedingly rare today, especially red earthenware. This is a late nineteenth century cabinet card that just sold on eBay, showing a studio portrait of a boy standing next to a wooden table, with his hand resting on a book, and below that is an earlier nineteenth century red earthenware jar with twisted handles. I can only imagine the jar having been made in one of two locations: New York or Pennsylvania. The card was recently found in Indiana.

Pennsylvania is certainly where it may have been made seeing that the card was produced at Peterman Studio in Bucyrus, Ohio. Some potters are known to have manufactured this type of handle in Pennsylvania in the 1800s, including John Bell's (1800-1880) business in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. Although, the shape of the jar and the twisted handles is also somewhat similar to objects manufactured by David Mandeville (1776-1859) in Circleville, New York, circa 1810-1840, which is located about seventy miles north of Manhattan.
