A Rare Late Eighteenth or Early Nineteenth Century Maine Red Earthenware Mug Purchased Yesterday at Antiques Week in Vermont

Yesterday, I traveled to Vermont with my niece Alexis in order to check out the antiques exhibited at Antiques Week in Vermont. There were two outdoor shows happening, although, we only had time to attend one of those events, Antiques at Fletcher Fields in Proctorsville, Vermont, located in a beautiful outdoor setting, featuring seventy outstanding dealers, not far from Okemo Mountain. 

We ended up purchasing two pieces of red earthenware; we found this wonderful incredibly rare late eighteenth or early nineteenth century red earthenware mug in the booth of Stafford Springs, Connecticut antiques dealer Charles Guinipero. He told me that he found it sometime ago in central New Hampshire.

Once I picked the mug up, I immediately realized that I have seen the exact handle and handle terminal on multiple occasions - interestingly though, every time I have seen this handle it has been on a jug, until now. However, more importantly, I have also seen this exact handle recovered in archaeological evidence that I have studied from North Yarmouth, Maine kept at the Maine Historic Preservation Commission in Augusta, which I documented in a research article I wrote for the November 2019 issue of Maine Antique Digest, titled, "The North Yarmouth, Maine Pottery Industry, Circa 1791-1890."
