A Red Earthenware Pot that was Recently Found in an Old House in Otisfield, Maine

This is another red earthenware object that I bought this week in Brimfield, Massachusetts. Limington, Maine antiques dealer, Bill Kelly brought this wonderful lidded nineteenth-century Maine-made red earthenware pot, which came from an early cape in Otisfield, Maine. The home's contents were sold at a small local auction, and this pot came out of the house along with many examples of late-nineteenth-century factory produced stoneware.

I do not know what potter's business is responsible for this object; although, I am fairly certain that it was made in Maine during the circa 1820-1860 period. This could be from a potter's business that is not widely known today.

Maine is known to have employed many red earthenware potter's business in the 1800's, but they are not all identified today. I like to refer to some of these businesses as "backyard potters" since they were not all full-time potters. Some of these potters may have been seasonal, while other potters may have only occasionally fired a kiln load of pottery every few years.

The glaze on this pot is really attractive, especially when it is viewed in direct sunlight. The lid is also likely original.
