A Recently Acquired Brightly Glazed 19th Century Red Earthenware Colander Found in Upstate New York

I ended up purchasing the nineteenth-century red earthenware colander that I wrote about last week, which was for sale in Vermont. I was told by the dealer that the colander was recently found in upstate New York.

I felt this was a special object, and a scarce form, so I really did not want to pass up the rare opportunity to add such a colorful object to my personal collection. The glaze is spectacular!

I believe this could be a product that was produced in Waterloo County, Ontario, circa 1840-1880. I have seen a few similar formed objects attributed to New England before; however, I believe those may have been Canadian-made objects, as well.

The Harbinson Collection, which is owned by the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, Quebec includes several objects decorated in a very similar choice of glaze. The museum attributes all of these objects to Waterloo County.

Note: I should mention that colanders were also a known form, which was produced in Ontario in the second half of the nineteenth-century.
