19th Century Red Earthenware Jar with Lid Found in Maine

This was another unexpected find earlier tis week in Maine. I have only ever seen one other example of this type of nineteenth century red earthenware jar—lacking its lid and held in a private Massachusetts collection.  

While its shape mirrors wares from the Dodge Pottery in Portland, Maine, and Addison County, Vermont, I suspect this piece originated in the Danvers and Salem area of Massachusetts. Remarkably, this example still retains its original lid. My guess is it was used to hold spices (or perhaps snuff or tobacco), as were the jars that I referenced from other locations. 

This jar will also, of course, be featured in my forthcoming two-volume, 1,900+ page, tenth book, titled, An Early Industry of Household Wares: The Red Earthenware of Salem Village, Danvers, Peabody, Beverly and Salem, Massachusetts.
