According to the National Register of Historic Places, “The McIntire Garrison House is a historic house on Cider Hill Road in York, Maine. Built c. 1707, it is an extremely rare well-preserved example of a New England colonial log garrison house, built by settlers for defense against Native American attacks. The house, possibly the oldest in the state, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1968.”
However, what this does not tell you is that this house has always remained in the ownership of the McIntire family, even though it has not been occupied full-time since 1870; however, the family has always maintained it, often using it as a vacation retreat.But because of concerns that the family has going forward with preserving the property, its contents, the house and barn, it has just been acquired by the Old York Historical Society, and there is some very exciting news that I will be able to announce soon about this property, the McIntire family and various types of red earthenware that the family has owned since the eighteenth and nineteenth century, essentially purchasing the objects when they were brand new!
