An Outstanding 18th or Early 19th Century Slip Decorated Red Earthenware Platter from Pennsylvania

This is certainly one of the best eighteenth or early nineteenth century slip decorated red earthenware platters that I have seen surface in some time. In fact, it has been owned privately for decades, although it was recently acquired by another private collector, whereas the dish measures about fifteen inches in length. The manner of the slip technique on this object is especially appealing in consideration of how it was carefully applied in somewhat of a figure "8" style.

Furthermore, this type of slip decorated red earthenware production from southeastern Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia area has been quite a desirable subject with three Philadelphia area objects selling for over $35,000 in the last year at Crocker Farm in Sparks, Maryland, and a fourth example that sold less than two years ago for $57,000, including the buyer's premium. 

Interestingly, some have speculated that the desirability for this area's production has been long overdue, seeing that the aesthetic or artistic appeal of these types of objects has been recognized by some for many years. But there has also been a variety of important published research in recent years that has contributed to the understanding of this type of production. 

However, the slip technique on this platter combined with the use of a green glaze is not an exact style that I have seen before. The use of these colors was certainly manufactured in Philadelphia, but they were also applied elsewhere in southeastern Pennsylvania (and actually elsewhere in America). Although, this style is quite rare, where there does not appear to be anything comparable to it owned by Winterthur Museum in Delaware, the Philadelphia Museum of Art or the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, as well as from the collection of Robesonia, Pennsylvania potter Lester Breininger, which predominantly sold on November 11, 2011 at Pook & Pook in Downington, Pennsylvania
