A Good Chinese Blue Glazed North Carolina Han Vase Found 35 Years Ago at a New Hampshire Flea Market

This circa 1920s-1930s Chinese blue glazed Han Dynasty style vase from Seagrove, Moore County, North Carolina is marked “Jugtown” on the base; it was found by a friend at a New Hampshire flea market about 35 years ago. In fact, this vase may have actually been originally sold in a store in New York City before migrating further north to New England.

Furthermore, what struck me as being different about this object is the shape of the two handle terminals, whereas I have not seen this type of handle on this style of vase before. I think this is a good object!

Interestingly, there are other examples of pre-1940 Chinese blue glazed pottery from Jugtown in this collection that were also found in similar contexts "in the wild" elsewhere in New England.

More recently, I wrote an article for the September 22, 2023 issue of Antiques & Auction News, titled, A Wide Selection Of 20th Century Pottery From North Carolina Found In New England: A Brief Examination Of Asian-Influenced Pottery From Jugtown Pottery. The story is all about trips that my niece Alexis and myself made throughout the Northeast in the last year or so in search of good art pottery made in North Carolina, circa 1920s-1970.
