A Red Earthenware Jar Recently Found in an Estate in New Bedford, Massachusetts

While hunting through the antique fields last week in Brimfield, Massachusetts, I came across this late eighteenth or early nineteenth century red earthenware jar for only $3. And I could not leave it there even though one side of the jar was covered in calcium deposits from water that had sat in the jar for likely a long time. I also knew that I had a proper lid at home that was original to this type of jar, and it ended up fitting it perfectly!

I spent some time last week removing most of the calcium, and it revealed some glaze loss on one side of the jar. Nevertheless, this type of jar is attributed to Southeastern Massachusetts, and it was possibly made in Bristol County, circa 1790-1830. The dealer also told me that it was found during an estate clean out in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
