I was rather surprised to find this large nineteenth century red earthenware “Savings Bank” in a thrift type shop while out and about in New England yesterday morning. The bank is probably English in origin and it was made in the form of a Federal period chest-of-drawers, whereas all of the applied flower decoration was formed by hand, individually stamped with the impression in the center and then highlighted with slip decoration.
Furthermore, I have not been able to find another bank like this example with this amount of applied decoration; the other examples that I have seen are adorned with less.
The bank survives in excellent condition, where these were objects that were heavily used and often given to children, so few survive with no damage. The bank or money box stands 6 3/4 inches tall and measures nearly 7 inches across.
