Overall, the American slipware was outstanding, where one of my favorite pieces was a circa 1870 slip script red earthenware plate manufactured by Simon Singer (1822-1894) in Haycock Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, which was inscribed in German, although it translates in English to, "Those who eat their belly full, should not forget the poor 1870." In fact, Singer's career as an immigrant potter in America is certainly a story worth reading about, which I happen to have briefly included in an article I posted on this website in November 2018.
Interestingly though, that article from 2018 also mentioned Elie Nadelman(1882-1946), who's collection is owned and displayed by the New York Historical Society in Manhattan today. I was surprised to see in yesterday's sale a nineteenth century red earthenware shaving mug that had been previously owned by Nadelman.
Although, my favorite piece in the sale was undoubtedly a slip decorated red earthenware pitcher manufactured at the Charles A. Lawrence (1829-1904) Pottery in Beverly, Massachusetts, circa 1870. This is definitely one of the better glazed Beverly examples known to exist today, which was previously owned by Barry Cohen and also sold at Sotheby's in 1991. For more information about the Beverly Pottery, I suggest a book I wrote that was published in November 2019 through Historic Beverly, titled, The Beverly Pottery: The Wares of Charles A. Lawrence.
