In anticipation of my next book being released in the next month or so from Historic Beverly in Massachusetts, titled, A Celebrated Industry: The Historic Wares of Southeastern Massachusetts, Bristol County and Cape Cod, this wonderful circa 1780-1830 Bristol County red earthenware jug was just discovered yesterday by a friend at a flea market in Essex County, Massachusetts. And my friend was nice enough to bring the jug by my house afterwards.
The aspect about this jug that is especially appealing is the variation found in the glaze, where this striped kind of glaze on one side is rather unusual for the Bristol County jugs that I have seen and will be illustrated in my forthcoming book. The visual difference in the glaze found on both sides of the jug is also quite nice! This type of glaze is also found on other forms manufactured in Bristol County, including jars, handled pots and pitchers.
These photos were taken yesterday in natural sunlight overlooking Lake Winnipesaukee in Alton Bay, New Hampshire. The circumstances of why this jug appeared at the flea market are unknown to me, but a lot of the material at this particular flea market is discovered during house cleanouts in New England, estate sales, small local auctions and various other ways that pickers find antiques.
