I have previously written about examples of eighteenth and early nineteenth century sgraffito from North Devon, England on this website, including objects recovered from the Piscataqua River in Portsmouth, New Hampshire now kept at the New Castle, New Hampshire Historical Society, as well as other objects recovered by archaeologists in Portsmouth kept at the archaeology department at Strawbery Banke.
Nonetheless, this likely example of North Devon sgraffito slipware was just recovered by author Derin Bray's son Gus along the shoreline in Kittery, Maine. Kittery is a neighboring community of Portsmouth to the north. The continued discovery of North Devon pottery in the Portsmouth area is a fascinating subject seeing that it was apparently imported into the area in the 1700s and early 1800s, although, it is not found nearly as much in archaeological contexts elsewhere in northern New England.
