Wonderful Green Glazed Jug with Make-Do Tin Handle Recently Found in the Midwest

This is a beautiful late-eighteenth or early-nineteenth century red earthenware jug with a make-do tin handle that I recently purchased from Dave Hillier at Antiques Associates at West Townsend in Massachusetts. It recently surfaced from a private collection in the Midwest.

The jug was likely made in southeastern Massachusetts or Cape Cod. This type of production also apparently happened in Rhode Island, but there is really no evidence to support what was actually made in that state.

The combination of the green glaze and make-do handle is excellent, and this is also a larger sized jug than many of those that survive from the southeastern Massachusetts and Bristol County area today. This type of green glaze was also manufactured at the Bradford-Parker Pottery in West Barnstable, which is why I included Cape Cod.
