In anticipation of that material, I recently wrote a preview article that was just published in the fall 2019 newsletter of the Yarmouth Historical Society. The newsletter was just mailed to historical society members, and I received a copy of it yesterday. The story explains some of the key material found in the forthcoming article, and some additional pictures were published that were not used in the Maine Antique Digest story.
One of the interesting images illustrated in the newsletter is the detail of an 1871 map of Yarmouth with arrows indicating the location of the Foster and Brooks pottery shops in the Corner Village neighborhood. This small neighborhood was the location of a group of family owned and operated businesses during the 1791-1890 period. From what I have seen and studied, I believe that significantly more pottery was produced at this location than any other business or town/city in Maine in the late-eighteenth or nineteenth century. And for some reason, much of this production has been somewhat forgotten in publication through the years, and I hope the feature story I wrote for Maine Antique Digest will once again place this industry back into the spotlight of major New England pottery industries.
