Circa 1780-1820 Slip-Decorated Red Earthenware Chamber Pot from Baltimore, Maryland

As I promised yesterday, this is the late-eighteenth or early-nineteenth century slip-decorated red earthenware chamber pot that my nephew Jason and myself were lucky to acquire earlier this month from Jeff Ingram's personal collection in Laurel, Maryland. This type of "swan" decoration is typically identified as a circa 1780-1820 style of production, based on similar wares excavated in Baltimore, Maryland.

I also noted yesterday that this style of slip-decoration is virtually impossible to find above ground today (i.e. archaeological context, privy, etc.). In fact, many of the Baltimore red earthenware objects that sold at auction in recent years have been excavated, which I believe include a "swan" decorated pitcher missing its handle that sold at Crocker Farm in Sparks, Maryland on October 29, 2011.

Nevertheless, this photograph was taken about one hour after we acquired the pot - we thought it was appropriate to take the picture on Baltimore's waterfront, which is likely not far from where it was originally manufactured.
