19th Century Red Earthenware Jar Reportedly Found in Vermont Sells on eBay

This small nineteenth century red earthenware jar measures only three-and-one-half inches tall. It was reportedly found in Vermont, and likely made in Addison County, Vermont during the early-to-mid-nineteenth century. The lid is also likely original.

There were clearly a number of potters who operated during the circa 1790-1850 period in Vermont; although, not a lot is known about the overall identity of every business today. As a result, I try to post as much material on this website as possible whenever a piece of potential Vermont red  earthenware appears in the public marketplace.

This particular example sold on eBay last night. There were 23 bids from eight bidders, so it was competitive. But I have no idea if the winning bidder bought the jar because they thought it was made in Vermont or for its aesthetic appeal. But this was a style of production also popular in Maine, as evident by a variety of jars in this size, which are currently on display in the Maine State Museum's 'Made in Maine' exhibit.
