19th Century Red Earthenware Jar Found in a Chicken Barn in Ellsworth, Maine

As I have already written in previous posts from today, I visited Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, Maine last weekend with my niece Alexis. But we also toured the Maine State Museum in Augusta, Maine and stopped at a number of antique type shops on our way. Our favorite spot for shops was probably Searsport, Maine, but there were other locations that we also enjoyed, as well.

For example, we discovered this large nineteenth century red earthenware jar, which I believe was made at the industry in North Yarmouth, Maine, inside a large store about 45 minutes from Bar Harbor. We were actually on our way to a shop in beautiful downtown Ellsworth, Maine, when we accidentally found this shop elsewhere in Ellsworth.

We weren't even aware of the shop, but it was nearly impossible to miss on Route 1; the owners had converted a huge two floor chicken barn into a group antique shop on the first floor and sold books on the second level. The shop was called 'Big Chicken Barn Books and Antiques.' According to the shop owners, "They are one of the most unique and well known destination spots in the coastal Maine area."

These pictures were taken alongside a lake on the outskirts of Acadia National Park. The jar would have originally been fitted with a lid with an inscribed number on the base that would have matched the number "20" inscribed on the bottom of the jar.
