As I have noted a few times in the past, the 2025 issue of Americana Insights is now available; this is the article that I contributed: "In his brief "Nathaniel Sellers: A Postmaster and Potter of Upper Hanover, Pennsylvania," Justin W. Thomas highlights this striking redware pitcher from the 1840s–50s and introduces us to an overlooked potter. Covered in a glossy black manganese slip and adorned with classic Pennsylvania German tulip motifs, the piece stands out for its playful hound-shaped handle—both a charming design element and a practical feature. The base is impressed with “Nathaniel Sellers / Upper Hanover, Pa.,” a rare signature that hints at the maker’s pride and ambition.
Although Sellers isn’t recorded as a potter in local documents, historical references link him to the area throughout his life. His decision to mark this piece may have been an effort to promote his craftsmanship or establish his name while working under another pottery. Since signed wares were uncommon among Pennsylvania German potters of the time, this pitcher likely held special meaning—and perhaps marked a defining moment in Sellers’s creative journey."
