A Good Red Earthenware Jar from Bristol County, Massachusetts that Sold at Doyle New York

This very good example of an eighteenth or early nineteenth century black glazed red earthenware jar from Bristol County, Massachusetts sold yesterday in a group lot at Doyle New York in New York City. The jar also retained what is perhaps its original lid, which is a rarity when compared to the amount of American made red earthenware jars that exist today from the 1800s without a lid. 

Interestingly, I actually spoke with a friend about this object earlier this week, and it is surprising the amount of Bristol County jars that survive today, but so few are decorated with just a black glaze. This particular jar was consigned from a longtime collector's estate in New Jersey, along with some other pottery in the sale.

Furthermore, this is also an outstanding form of jar, whereas the black glaze on this type of object is really in my opinion about as good as it gets with black glazed objects made anywhere in America during this period. It is really a work of art, which may have drawn some type of ancient or Asian influence in form, especially in consideration of the China trade industry that occurred nearby in New Bedford, Massachusetts.

Nonetheless, this lot sold very reasonably for just $225 plus the buyer's premium.
