A Good Western New York Slip-Decorated Red Earthenware Jar From the Dittmar Collection at Olde Hope Antiques in New York City

Included as part of my forthcoming 800-900 page western New York book, due out sometime later this year is a wide selection of very unusual slip-decoration techniques that adorn various types of red earthenware jars made in the Bloomfield, New York area before 1830. In fact, this is an example of that type of production, which is currently exhibited in the gallery of Olde Hope Antiques in Manhattan in New York City. 

These types of jars are typically attributed to the Nathaniel Rochester (1751-1831) Pottery in West Bloomfield, New York, circa 1818-1831, although the Rochester Pottery was most likely not the only business producing slip-decoration in the Bloomfield, New York area before 1830. For instance, there is little known about a company known as the Wheeler Griffin Pottery that Alvin Wilcox would eventually acquire, and Griffin may have also produced some slip-decorated red earthenware. 

Furthermore, this jar is displayed as part of the George and Florence Dittmar Collection of Pennsylvania, which has been owned by the couple's children since 2002. The jar also retains some history of ownership that is written on the base, which reads, "Collection of Lou Wales, Bristol, NY." This is not a collector who is known to me, although Bristol is located only about six miles south of where this jar was made so it is likely that this object did not travel very few prior to this collector's acquisition of this object. 

I also want to add that I know of at least two other jars that are related to this object that are privately owned in New York, although each with different slip techniques. These objects will also be illustrated in my forthcoming book, one of which will be published on either the front or back cover.
