A Possible Rare Example of 19th Century Red Earthenware from the Carl Mehwaldt Pottery in Bergholz, New York

For any of you who follow (or even don't follow) Ron Korman and Muleskinner Antiques Monday emails from the location of the business at the Buffalo Airport in western New York - then you may have seen this glazed nineteenth century red earthenware jar or vase that was posted to yesterday's email. Interestingly, I believe this is possibly a rare example of nineteenth century red earthenware made at the Carl Mehwaldt (1808-1887) Pottery in Bergholz, Niagara County, New York, circa 1850-1880. 

In fact, the Das Haus Museum in Bergholz owns two very similar shaped jars or vases that were made at the Mehwaldt Pottery, whereas I have only seen a few of these types of objects through the years, which includes those owned by the museum and a third example that retains a strong history of private family ownership in Bergholz.
