A Rare 19th Century Decorated Red Earthenware Jar Acquired Today in Boxborough, Massachusetts

Last summer, I posted a story about an outstanding eighteenth or early nineteenth century red earthenware jar that I acquired at Rachel and Josh Gurley's antiques show at the Deerfield Fairgrounds, as part of Antiques Week in New Hampshire. Interestingly, I initially posted the jar to my Facebook and Instagram accounts, and Jonathan Rickard, who authored the book Mocha and Related Dipped Wares, 1770-1939 in 2006, commented saying that the repeated swag pattern derived from architectural details developed by the architect Robert Adam (1728-1792), a type of decoration found on various objects manufactured in Europe and America in the eighteenth and nineteenth century.

Nevertheless, I purchased this nineteenth century red earthenware jar today from Cape Cod antiques dealer Brian Cullity at Rachel and Josh Gurley's antiques show at the Boxboro Regency Hotel in Boxborough, Massachusetts. And while the decoration on this jar is different than the one I wrote about last summer - it still has a wonderful aesthetic appeal in the way the black decoration was applied; additionally, the decoration is a lot more striking in-hand!
