My niece Alexis and myself were quite surprised to find this small ancient style nineteenth century painted red earthenware vase with a glazed interior last week in the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area. The vase was made at the Charles A. Lawrence Pottery in Beverly, Massachusetts, circa 1870s or thereabouts. Interestingly, the painted decoration includes some script on the front that appears like initials or an abbreviation of some sort, which probably has some local historical significance. A very rare find, nonetheless!
For more information about this type of production - see a book I wrote that was published in 2019 by Historic Beverly, titled, The Beverly Pottery: The Wares of Charles A. Lawrence.
