I have known about this late nineteenth or twentieth century American-made red earthenware floor vase for a few years now, although I have never been positive where it was made. However, the vase is great, having been inspired by ancient design, whereas the shape is outstanding and the glaze is amazing! It really is a good object!
We picked this vase up last weekend at a flea market along the Mid-Coast of Maine, but like I said it is something that I have previously known about from the dealer who owned it, as well as antiques dealers who have previously told me about it. The dealer who I purchased it from exclusively sells at flea markets along the Mid-Coast of Maine, and he told me that he purchased it from an old local estate.
Some have suggested that this vase may have been an early piece made in North Carolina, although the shape doesn't really fit with early production in that state, and I do not believe this is a piece that was made later in the 1900s. It has decent weight to it, and the unglazed red clay base reveals significant wear. Most of the interior is also unglazed, which isn't really an indictor of a lot, seeing that many late nineteenth century American red earthenware flowerpots are also unglazed on the interior.
But there has also been speculation by some of the dealers who told me about this object a few years back that this piece may in fact date from the late 1800s, having possibly been made in New England. I know there was a revival of this type of production with some of the potteries that still existed in central and northern New England in the late 1800s, but I have not seen a vase of this size before. Nevertheless, though, this is a great object that I hope to learn more about!
