Slip-Decorated Red Earthenware Pan Recovered from an Eighteenth Century Context in Preston, Connecticut

I was rather surprised to recently learn about this slip-decorated red earthenware pan recovered by archaeologists at the 1777 Ebenezer Story Site, located along the Thames River in Preston, Connecticut. To my knowledge, the manufacturer of the pan is unknown, although, it was recovered within an eighteenth century context.

The site contained a 1777 homestead built by Ebenezer Story and his wife Mehitable Story, where the family worked as fishermen and farmers. Interestingly, this pan may not have been locally made seeing that some wares are known to have traveled to southern Connecticut, especially before and after the American Revolution, and the Thames River is easily accessible to the Atlantic Ocean.
