Excellent Edgefield, South Carolina Slip-Decorated Stoneware Jug Sells at Ivy Auctions

Published in the October 9, 2019 issue of Antiques & Auction News is a story I wrote about the remarkable Thomas Chandler (1810-1854) stoneware exhibit at the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina, titled, "Thomas Chandler's Pottery Production: McKissick Museum Of The University of South Carolina Holds Innovative Exhibition." Among the places where Chandler worked during his career was Baltimore, Georgia and Edgefield, South Carolina, such as the Collin Rhodes Factory in Shaws Creek in the Edgefield District.

Collin Rhodes (1811-1881) owned or co-owned a number of pottery factories, including Pottersville, Phoenix Factory, and the Collin Rhodes Factory in Edgefield during the early to mid-nineteenth century.  The Collin Rhodes Factory was one of the few businesses in Edgefield that specialized in slip-decoration, such as script, floral designs and more elaborate decorations like figures.

This excellent nineteenth century two-gallon stoneware jug just sold earlier this month at Ivy Auctions, Inc. in Laurens, South Carolina; the jug is marked in slip-script, "C Rhodes / Maker / 1850." It sold for nearly $31,000.
