A 19th Century Red Earthenware Jar that Sold at an Onsite Sale in Brownsville, Vermont

A few months ago, on Friday October 20th, William A. Smith, Inc. based in Plainfield, New Hampshire sold the contents of antiques collector, Donna Van Fleet's home at an onsite sale in Brownsville, Vermont. Smith Auctions described the home as having been "decorated with the utmost quality of furnishings and accessories."

It should be no surprise that there were a number of Vermont-made objects in this collection, which included a terrific nineteenth century red earthenware jar that is very-similar to an object owned by the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont. The museum attributes their jar to Middlebury or New Haven, Vermont. It was reportedly "found by collector, Preston R. Bassett in the greater Middlebury area in the 1950s."

A similar jar was also discovered in Vermont before 1950 by Massachusetts author, Lura Woodside Watkins, which is illustrated in figure 72a in 'Early New England Potters and Their Wares;' whereas, this jar is owned today by the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.
