An Important Slip Decorated Red Earthenware Child's Dish that Sold in Mebane, North Carolina on Friday May 29, 2015

A few days ago, I wrote an article that described a few of the Loy family members, who were potters in Alamance County, North Carolina in the eighteenth and nineteenth-centuries. The report touched upon, recent auction sales, that a few objects attributed to this family brought in the past year. Those specific objects both sold for five-figures. They were both prolific examples of North Carolina made red earthenware that were easily museum-quality products. Here is a link to that entire report.

The reason that those wares was discussed was for a comparison to a small slip decorated child's bowl that was set to sell at Mebane Antique Auctions in Mebane, North Carlolina on Friday night (May 29, 2015). The dish was attributed to Solomon Loy in Alamance County - and, likely manufactured in the early-1800's.

According to what I wrote: This dish is not as prolific as the two previous examples that were discussed; however, it is still a rare, attractive and accomplished product from a historically important southern potter. The auction house says the dish was consigned from a private Alamance County family in the Kimesville Commuity.

Attached to the base of this dish is an old label; unfortunately, the auction house has not disclosed online what the tag reads in any of its listings - even though, there are definitely words written. They describe the old tag as "an old piece of tape from the family owner." They go onto further describe the dish as, "totally original, unaltered and a truly important new discovery of early Piedmont, North Carolina redware."

Truthfully, I was merely curious to see how this dish would sell when compared to the most gifted wares from this family, like those that were discussed that achieved $18,000 and $36,000, respectfully, in the past year. I also wasn't sure if I would be able to obtain a realized price for this bowl seeing that I would not be in attendance. Luckily, I have been able to obtain the price, for which the child's dish sold for - and, surprisingly, it sold for for only $475 (plus buyer's premium and sales tax), which is a lot less than I had anticipated the bowl would achieve. Honestly, I felt it would sell for at least $1,000, but, none-the-less, the dish is still a wonderful rare example of red earthenware made by a historically significant southern potter. In my opinion, someone brought home a nice dish at a bargain price.
