The Nye Family Legacy: China Trade Merchants, Maritime Mariners, and the Preservation of Quaker Red Earthenware

The eighteenth and early nineteenth century red earthenware manufactured by the Quaker potters of Bristol County, Massachusetts will be referenced throughout my forthcoming two-volume, tenth book, An Early Industry of Household Wares: The Red Earthenware of Salem Village, Danvers, Peabody, Beverly and Salem, Massachusetts. In fact, those objects will include two jars retaining a documented verbal history within the Nye family of Nantucket (they came from the family's estate). Unlike the island’s original 1659 "First Purchaser" families, the Nyes originated on the Massachusetts mainland as descendants of Benjamin Nye (1620–1707), who settled in Sandwich on Cape Cod in 1637. By the mid-to-late 1700s, drawn by the island's rise as the global capital of whaling, branches of the family migrated to Nantucket. They quickly assimilated by marrying into prominent local dynasties like the Macys, Coffins, and Gardners, establishing a formidable maritime lineage.

Members of the family became prominent master mariners and shipowners; notably, Captain Joseph Palmer Nye (1814–1894) commanded major Nantucket whaling vessels on perilous, multi-year voyages. Beyond whaling, the Nyes partnered with mainland relatives to run successful merchant operations. As shipping agents and investors in the lucrative global China Trade, they imported high-value goods like tea and silk. They were also active in regional defense; during the Revolutionary War, a family member was commissioned to command a Shaving Mill—a small, aggressive privateer boat used to patrol the contested waters between Falmouth and Nantucket. Today, this extensive maritime and mercantile legacy is preserved through historical records, logbooks, and correspondence housed in the Nantucket Whaling Museum's Nye Family Papers collection.
